In the scientific research endeavor, discovery of limited value if it is not disseminated. However, most research findings are of interest to a rather select group of aficionados. Job retention and promotion requires evidence of productivity, and this is widely taken to be publication in high impact journals. However, publication of a paper in such journals does not necessarily equate with work of wide interest and influence. Publication is really at the whim of the journal editors and their selected reviewers. The best measure of impact is how highly cited the work becomes and this is evident only after a period of years.
