What Work/Life Balance?

Submitted by S. Pelech - Kinexus on Thu, 11/11/2010 - 14:34.
Those of us that are cursed with curiosity and blessed with an academic faculty appointment have the luxury of pursuing our greatest interests and calling it work. Sure there are some less desirable aspects of our occupation such as grant application writing and committee service, but on the whole it is an extremely pleasurable experience. Naturally then, it is not surprising that many scientists are engaged for long hours almost every day in activities related to their scientific passions. The broader these scientific interests may be, the fuller the life experience, because this will naturally expand and encompass other disciplines in the arts and social sciences. We are indeed lucky when our avocations become our vocation. It is even better when our significant others can also share our interests and experiences.
