Kinetica Online is pleased to provide direct links to commentaries from our senior editor Dr. Steven Pelech has posted on other blogs sites. Most of these comments appear on the GenomeWeb Daily Scan website, which in turn highlight interesting blogs that have been posted at numerous sites in the blogosphere since the beginning of 2010. A wide variety of topical subjects are covered ranging from the latest scientific breakthroughs, research trends, politics and career advice. The original blogs and Dr. Pelech’s comments are summarized here under the title of the original blog. Should viewers wish to add to these discussions, they should add their comments at the original blog sites.

Speculating on the Significance of the Sponge Genome

During the Victorian era, much of biological science was cataloguing the diversity of life and naming the organisms so that everyone knew that they were describing the same creatures. The sequencing of genomes is really just a continuation and refinement of this endeavor. The nucleotide sequence of the genome of an organism is its ultimate name, albeit rather long. Since the gene sequencing technology is becoming increasingly inexpensive, this activity will become rather commonplace. Personally, I am looking forward to the time soon when the genomic sequencing of yet another organism's genome is no longer news worthy, but instead we find out more about what's really interesting from this information.
