Most of these comments appear on the GenomeWeb Daily Scan website, which in turn highlight interesting blogs that have been posted at numerous sites in the blogosphere since the beginning of 2010. A wide variety of topical subjects are covered ranging from the latest scientific breakthroughs, research trends, politics and career advice. The original blogs and Dr. Pelech’s comments are summarized here under the title of the original blog. Should viewers wish to add to these discussions, they should add their comments at the original blog sites.

The views expressed by Dr. Pelech do not necessarily reflect those of the other management and staff at Kinexus Bioinformatics Corporation. However, we wish to encourage healthy debate that might spur improvements in how biomedical research is supported and conducted.

Quality vs. Quantity

Every effort should be expended for graduate students to publish original research in peer-reviewed journals. This exercise should be an essential part of the training experience of Ph.D. students. At the University of British Columbia, several of our graduate programs in the health-related sciences require that Ph.D. students also write mock grant applications. The capabilities to attract funding and effectively disseminate research results and conclusions are essential skill sets for a successful academic researcher. That being said, it is also true that graduate students that are engaged in highly competitive research areas can often be scooped so that their work does not have sufficient novelty upon completion to be published. As long as the graduate student has undertaken a series of original studies that have resulted in a body of research findings that meet the standards of a Ph.D. thesis in a proper defense, he or she should not be denied the degree.
